History of the Ford F-150 | Hamden, CT

The Ford F-150 is the top pickup truck on the market, consistently out-performing its competitors. However, it didn’t get so successful without hard work along the way. Check out the history of the Ford F-150, from when it started to where it is now.

The Ford F-150 Through The Decades

  • 1910s – In the 1910s, Ford saw an opportunity to create a whole new vehicle from the Model T: a pickup. Of course, a pickup at the time simply consisted of a building a flatbed on top of the roadster’s frame.
  • 1930s – Over the next couple of decades, Ford worked hard to develop and improve the Model T pickup truck. Ford developed both the Model A and Model B concepts, which evened out weight distribution and offered a longer bed. It also offered a V8 engine, which helped it deliver more power than before.
  • 1940s – Ford halted production on the Model T pickup, along with all consumer vehicles, during the 1940s in an effort to provide vehicles for World War II. In the late 1940s after the war, Ford began developing the F-series pickup truck, which debuted with eight different platforms.
  • 1950s – The F-series continued to receive updates throughout the following decade, like adding an improved V8 engine and adding the infamous F-100 and F-250 to the lineup. By 1956, the F-Series V8 engine delivered an impressive 173 horsepower.
  • 1970s – The sixth-generation of the F-Series proved to be the most impressive yet. The SuperCab’s debut in 1974 offered even more power, space, and utility than previous models did. Finally, in 1975, the Ford F-150 debuted for the first time, a vehicle that offered a midway point between the F-100 and the F-250 vehicles.
  • 1980s – The F-150 officially took over as the F-100 went out of production in 1983. The 1980s also came with custom packages and performance upgrades.
  • 1990s – The Ford F-Series officially celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1998. The F-150 continued to improve in styling and performance through the 90s.
  • 2010s – Finally, in 2010, the F-150 gained a fully aluminum body, an improvement that helped it earn a five-star safety rating and set it apart from other pickups.
